Recipe Instructions:
Ingredients:
• For the Dough:
o 2 cups all-purpose flour
o 1/2 teaspoon salt
o 1/4 cup cold water
o 1/4 cup vegetable oil
• For the Filling:
o Choose one or more of the following options:
Ground beef seasoned with onions, garlic, salt, and pepper (cooked and cooled)
Shredded cheese (like mozzarella or a blend of cheeses)
Hearts of palm (chopped and seasoned with a touch of salt)
• For Frying:
o Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Dough:
o In a mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
o Gradually add the cold water and vegetable oil, mixing until a smooth dough forms. You may need to adjust the amount of water slightly to achieve the right consistency.
o Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for a few minutes until it becomes elastic. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and let it rest for about 30 minutes at room temperature.
2. Prepare the Filling:
o Cook the ground beef with onions, garlic, salt, and pepper until fully cooked. Allow it to cool completely.
o If using cheese, shred it if not already shredded.
o If using hearts of palm, chop them into small pieces and season lightly with salt.
3. Assemble the Pastel:
o Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface until it's thin, about 1/8 inch thick.
o Using a round cutter (about 4-5 inches in diameter), cut out circles of dough.
o Place a spoonful of your chosen filling in the center of each circle. Be careful not to overfill.
4. Fold and Seal:
o Fold each circle of dough in half to cover the filling, forming a half-moon shape.
o Press the edges firmly with your fingers to seal. You can use a fork to crimp the edges for a decorative touch.
5. Fry the Pastel:
o Heat vegetable oil in a deep-frying pan or pot to about 350°F (175°C).
o Carefully place the pastels into the hot oil, a few at a time, without overcrowding the pan.
o Fry each side for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
o Remove the pastels with a slotted spoon and drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil.
6. Serve:
o Serve the pastels hot, either plain or with a dipping sauce of your choice, such as hot sauce or a tangy salsa.
